Review: Cybex Aton Carseat

The first thing I noticed when unpacking the Cybex Aton is how impossibly light the carrier and base are. At only 8.8 pounds, the Cybex Aton is one the lightest carriers on the market. I’ve really come to appreciate this after making numerous trips up and down the two flights of stairs to our house.

For me the base is one of the most remarkable features. The base was super easy to install in both our small sedan and minivan. One of the things I really like about it is the proprietary belt tensioning mechanism that works when installing using the latch connectors or seat belt. You simply press down and the lever clicks into place resulting in a snug and secure installation every time. For traveling the base can easily be packed into a carry on suitcase or even left attached to the carrier. The latch connectors also snap into the base so you don’t have two straps dangling around.

The Cybex Aton looks very stylish and comes in a wide variety of colors. It features a mesh sunshade, which is easy to raise and lower using only one hand. When stowed the sunshade is barely even noticeable. The carrying handle adjusts to three different positions. I would have enjoyed a more ergonomic grip on the handle but overall the grip is okay. The car seat’s padded liner is easy to remove and machine washable. The car seat also comes with a matching infant insert to provide the littlest ones with extra padding around the head. Finally the five point

restraint system is top notch. I know my baby will be held securely in the seat in the unfortunate event of a crash.

The only problem I have with the Cybex is that it doesn’t securely fit into our “universal” snap and go stroller. I’m sure if you purchase all Cybex products including the Callisto stroller, the system will work very well together.

One other issue for some people might be the cost of the Cybex Aton and associated products. At around $200, the Cybex Aton itself is in the mid level to expensive range as far as car seats go. The stroller can be had for upwards of $300 and an extra base will run you about $100. With that said it is hard to put a price on the safety of your children.

Pros

Low profile base and lightweight carrier

Easy and secure belt tensioning mechanism

Wide variety of colors making it stylish in any vehicle

Award winning safety and design features

Cons

                Somewhat expensive

Doesn’t securely fit into our universal stroller

Overall I would say the Cybex Aton is great car seat suitable for even the most safety conscious and style minded parent. With its lightweight form and German engineered functions, it leaves little to be desired. Even though it is on the pricier side, you receive a good value for your money. And given the popularity of this award winning car seat abroad, you will find peace of mind knowing your precious cargo is safely secured on the road home.
