Dads taking over as carpool kings

I'm surprised this appears to be a national trend, but it sure is true at our house. My wife works at a traditional job downtown (with no parking). I work at home and supposedly have lots of time to take breaks and drive kids all over town to the doctor, soccer, and assorted playdates. I have to say it's a part of parenting that is the least ennobling to me. I know some moms and dads say it's a special time where they actually get to talk to their kids, and maybe I'll feel that way when they are teens and I'm glad for any time I have to plug into what they are doing. But right now, it feels like underpaid taxi work

Just a few short weeks since I told my son emphatically that there could never be a planet with 2 sons, NASA comes along and discovers one.

The simulation is fascinating in that the reporters talk about a planet that "revolves around two stars," which seems clearly impossible without defying all law of physics. In fact, one of the suns is simply orbiting around the larger sun, with a planet on a an outer orbit ring. Still, it would be pretty amazing to see the light of two suns ever changing in their tandem sunrises and sunsets.
The planetary system is only 200 light years away, so not in a galaxy far, far away, like that of Tatouine, the birth planet of Luke Skywalker, which is where my son got this wacky notion in the first place.

Not really on-topic, but always amazed at how predictable we men are. I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often actually. Could be a new approach for the Pentagon.

Police say on August 7, the man inserted a card into a cash machine in central Paris to withdraw money when two young women approached him and asked for money. The women waved a newspaper at the man in an attempt to distract him, but the technique didn't work.

Rod Stewart will be a dad for the 7th time, reports People magazine.

The 65-year-old rocker and his 39-year-old model wife Penny Lancaster, will be having a baby. The couple already has one one child together, 4-year-old son Alastair. Rod Stewart has five other kids from past relationships.

Small, but conclusive findings show that the dad bond is important in teaching kids how to deal with the little frustrations of the day.

The team found that men who reported poorer relationships with their fathers were 4 percent more likely than other men to report encountering stress during the day. They were also more likely, by an undetermined amount, to develop a bad mood or health problems after encountering daily stress.

Another candidate for "Worst Dad of the year," this guy just couldn't resist a little tickle of the delivery nurse as his wife was being wheeled into the delivery room. This guy was sentenced to six months in the pokey, and missed out on the delivery as he was hauled away.

The defense attorney claimed his client was prone to blackouts. What man can't say he isn't "prone to crazed sex blackouts," but, really...? Outside the delivery room?! I can safely say that that is one day that most dads have very few, if any, thoughts about sex. And that's true for even the sexy nurse fantasists among us.

I just took my daughter parasailing in Hawaii. Several days before, I spent a ton of time researching whether there are ever accidents and if I was the worst dad ever for thinking of taking my nine year old daughter on a ride a couple hundred feet over the Pacific.

The more I read, the better I felt though. Accidents like the one described here, which is about as horrible as they come, appear to now only happen outside the US, where there are few if any controls. I would never think of parasailing in Mexico, for example.

Four-time and defending NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is now a dad.

A baby girl was delivered to Johnson and wife Chandra Wednesday. Both mother and daughter are doing fine, according to a Hendrick Motorsports spokesperson.

New world record: New Dad at 79

There's a new kid on the geriatric dads block, and has a new son. He had to beat out a man a year younger and more virile than he was to win the record. At 79, Raymond Calvert is the world's oldest new dad.

I hope I'm still humping like this at 79, though it's a bit hard to believe that no special drugs were involved, unless you count his 25 year old partner.

Calvert and 25-year-old girlfriend Charlotte became proud parents of tiny Jamie Rai ten weeks ago.
