Trying to start a family.

My wife and I have just started trying to get pregnant. We stopped using condoms and I was wondering how soon is soon enough to test for pregnancy? She is supposed to have her period on the 27th or 29th of this month and we have been having "unwrapped" sex since the 16th. Is this enough time for her to get pregnant? I know nothing about ovulation. I guess we can wait to see if she has her period but I was just wondering how successful our first attempt could be.
