Be ready to play along with your children

As adults we all have to be serious all day and even our idea of what is fun or funny is often tempered by what we’re supposed to like to do as grown-ups.

That’s why having little kids is so great. Suddenly you have the best audience for anything you want to do or say that might make them laugh. Especially if you take things they love and play iwth them, you’re always a hit. If you’re theatrically inclined, do a puppet show or put on funny clothes and act out funny stories. If you can sing, make mix tapes of their favorite movie songs or cartoon theme music. You haven’t seen a child really laugh until you’ve sung along with the munchkins in “We represent the Lollipop Guild” from the Wizard of Oz, or mangled the words to the theme from Little Einsteins. Play tag in the streets or listen for funny games they are playing with their little friends.
Right now, my seven-year-old daughter plays a game with her friends that goes like this: When you see a Volkswagen Beetle, you point to it and say “punchbuggy,” count to ten aloud, and then say the color. It’s completely absurd, but my daughter and I play it wherever we go and she has become very competitive at it. I could have said, “yes, dear, that’s very interesting,” but instead it’s turned into another little ritual and proof that I’m keeping track of what’s going on in her world.
