Styli to avoid fingerprints on your new iPad

I’m doing more and more presenting on the iPad as we prepare to relaunch Pregnancy Magazine in digital format in December. The iPad looks very good, except when it’s covered with fingerprints. Then it has the look of a greasy toy used by someone who eats a lot of potato chips. Unfortunately, you don’t even get to eat potato chips to have an iPad that looks that way. No one can touch an iPad without leaving messy prints.

However, it doesn’t have to be that way. With a minimum of inconvenience, you can use a special stylus with a fabric tip that actually does a better job of manipulating pages and buttons on the surface of an iPad or iPhone.

Pogo makes a simple one called the Sketch that does the job for $14.95 (or less than $10 on Amazon). Despite the photo here, it is actually smaller and thinner than the other pen below.

Review: Griffin Beacon for iPhone

As a lazy dad who believes that the invention of the remote control is truly proof of God’s existence and New Testament beneficence, we had to try the Griffin Beacon. Griffin Beacon, using technology from Dijit, turns your iPhone or iPad into a universal remote control.

Review: Time Tracker Mini

I’m a pussy cat dad, a long way from being a Tiger Dad, but I have amped up my discipline on piano lessons, keeping my kids at the keyboard for up to an hour. … So when I got a chance to try the Time Tracker Mini from Learning Resources, I was glad to look at a new option. … However, there is no way to see how much time is left as the clock wears down, other than having a warning at some point in the practice. In some cases, it might be best not to let users know how much time is left (fidgety kids who check the time every 30 seconds), but most people like to know how much time is left to allocate time to different parts of a lesson.

Review: Griffin Portable Security for Laptops

The first step, of course, is to get a secure password and a secure encryption system (we like Macs for that reason), but the second, is to lock your machine down if you spend a lot of time working away from home. We tried out the Griffin Portable Security Techsafe locking system, which was invented I would guess because computers, at least our Macs, no longer come with a security latch built in to their cases. … LIke any lock and cable system, this is clearly not meant to chain a laptop somewhere out of sight and will only act as a slight deterrent, but one sure enough to stop anyone in all but the meanest of Starbucks locations.

Review: Road Trip family game

Gas up the wagon and drive to a shady picnic table where the whole family can play Road Trip, a new game from Daddy-O Productions. Packaged in a playful tin box, this is a fun game for kids 7 and up and their parents.
