So, how did I do? Mostly, okay. At the end of week one, my seven year old was crying and complaining that everyone yells at him. I guess I was part of that "everyone." In our defense, he doesn't always react when you talk directly to him, so raising one's voice is often the next step. I resolved to be better. Week 2 has gone more smoothly, though the boredom level and post-holiday crash has been hard on everyone. But I haven't done much yelling at least, even when my boy doesn't respond. As much as I love them, and am painfully aware that their childhoods are a blip in time, I'm looking forward to getting back to the usual school routine on Tuesday.

Sadly, the pulling away never gets any easier. My last one just moved out. He's across town but not in my home. I see him frequently but not right here every day. Hug them tightly.

Paul ... I agree completely about not letting kids play video games during the week. I don't have to enforce it quite to the extent you do right now (as my boy is 2.5 years old) but I do know those days are coming.

I love the idea of focusing on toys that aren't video games. When I was young, my dad and I build model cars, trains, planes together and it was a blast. I can't wait to do something like that with my boys as they grow up.

That even fits our challenge to dads this year to build something fun with their kids. I thought I'd pass it along and share with you. "Battery Operated Kids Projects" ... http://on.fb.me/batterypoweredkids

I have the same answer to the "it's not fair" comment that BOTH OF MY BOYS STILL SAY at 15 and 18. I just say, "Life's not fair: get used to it." I say it in a very matter-of-fact voice. Now, as often as not, they'll say it with me...

Ya, I too think about this. Ours are too young to even talk now (2 mo and 2 YO), but I wonder. I've already decided that if they get trophies for everything I'm going to nip that in the bud. Hopefully by the time they're playing sports the trophies for everyone nanny state mentality will ease up a bit.

Most important is NOT overdoing the antibiotics with young kids because they never will develop their own antibodies otherwise!

A little being sick is actually healthy!

That's crappy. Lawyers who know they would lose in the end but go after these people anyway because they know they won't fight it.

I hope she does, because it's an actual attempt to include both types of parents. Yes people, moms and dads can both be parents.

I just wish Parents magazine understood this, or just changed their own name to Mothers already.
