The Pocket Referee is a low tech toy that teaches kids about conflict resolution and negotiation. It comes in the form of a shiny gold coin or an antique brass coin both with carrying case and clip.
How it works: When two kids are fighting over something that can have only 1 outcome (like who will use the blue cup, who gets to choose the TV show, who gets to use the computer first) the kids can use the Pocket Referee to sort it out themselves instead of having to ask mom or dad to be the mediator.
When you first get the Ref, determine who will be the initial 'holder'. Then when a conflict arises, the holder of the Ref gets to decide if the thing being fought over is important enough to lose control of the Ref. If it is, then that child will get the thing, and the other child will get the Ref for the next conflict.
If the holder chooses not to relinquish control of the Ref, then the thing being fought over will go to the other child.
Best for ages 5 and up. (also great for adults) The immediate benefit to the child is that they have the power to decide their own outcome.
The benefit to parents is that they don't have to be the bad guy by choosing a 'winner' nor do they have to keep track of who got what last time.
The Pocket Referee teaches kids how to calmly talk through a conflict and negotiate for the outcome. It gives quiet kids a voice and gives aggressive kids rules to acknowledge that.
Lastly, the Pocket Referee allows parents the opportunity to spend more positive time with their kids, praising them for working things out instead of admonishing them for not getting along.
We love the Pocket Referee. It's a very simple, very low-tech solution to one of the worst parts of being a parent: having to continually play King Solomon to children arguing over whose turn it isThis is a dad-invented product that deserves a shot if you have two or more kids who fight about every decision. And don't we all?
