Golden Kids Rules melds the husky, time-worn vocals and the musical instincts of a seasoned performer with the charming artistry of his three young grandchildren.
When renowned musician and singer-songwriter Chip Taylor, who penned “Wild Thing” and “Angel of the Morning” among dozens of classics performed by Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin among others, became a grandfather, he directed his creative energy to writing new songs with and for his grandkids. ‘Golden Kids Rules’ melds the husky, time-worn vocals and the musical instincts of a seasoned performer with the charming artistry of his three young grandchildren. The album overflows with love of family and the musical bonds that hold them together.
Taylor’s Academy Award-winning brother Jon Voight encapsulates the effect of ‘Golden Kids Rules’ in the liner notes, musing, “Charm is an ingredient we seem to have lost in music over the years...and purity. To me, this album is a treasure that comes just at the right time to lift us to a reminder of the power of family and the majesty of children.” A 36-page booklet with lyrics is included. Chip Taylor who is best known for writing "Wild Thing" now moves his style to capture the interest of both that generation as well as youngsters who can identify with new Golden Rules from a child's perspective.
In a word, this CD is fantastic. Coming from a guy who wrote songs for Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and others, that shouldn't be much of a surprise. But what makes Chip Taylor & The Grandkids such a joy is the obvious warmth and affection between Chip and his three young granddaughters. The contrast between Chip's grizzled (in the most positive way) vocals and those of the girls had my daughter and me listening over and over, singing along where we could, holding hands and humming elsewhere. It's a true celebration of familiy and a wonderful example of what happens when generations come together.
