Breastfeed the baby

We at GreatDad are big believers in breastfeeding and strongly urge you to do all you can to support mom, especially since the first meals can be a challenge. The baby doesn't know how to do it, mom may be exhausted and easily frustrated, and milk might not come in right away. However, there are ways she can prepare herself for it even before the baby is born.

  • Doing homework: Ideally, your spouse can start finding out all about breastfeeding much before the baby is born. She can do this by reading good books on the topic, and by talking to other more experienced moms. She can also opt for a breastfeeding class as she enters the third trimester.

  • Supporting natural processes: As the mother’s pregnancy advances, her body prepares itself for breastfeeding. The blood flow to her breasts increases to enable the development of milk-ducts and milk-producing cells. She can support these natural processes by eating healthy foods, and by taking adequate rest and exercise.

  • Buying nursing accessories: Your spouse would now need to shop for some basic nursing accessories. Nursing bras are ideal for pregnant women because they support their bigger breasts. Some come with flaps that can be opened at feeding time. A nursing top, with convenient flaps, may also be a handy accessory to buy. Breast pads can also help stem excess leakage from the breasts in the first weeks following pregnancy.
