"Beauty and the Beast" is a great fairytale. It teaches children that looks are not always an indicator of a person's character. A nice looking person is not always a friend and someone not so nice looking could be nice inside. It also teaches children that everyone deserves a second chance and one mistake can be overcome, sometimes at great cost but it can be done.

By Frances,   From Alford
Goldilocks and the Three Bears

By Marie,   From Portland
The Ugly Duckling is the first fairytale I shared with my children because it teaches them about some of the realities we will see in life. There will always be those who mock you because you are different than they are, ie. gender, race, religion or even where you were born or were you live. There will also be some who think they are better looking than you or perhaps shun you because you are better looking than them, that includes intellectual differences as well. But in the end it is about self-discovery and knowing in the inner you and the "swan" that you can be in spite of what others say. I often hear in competitions the winner telling their audience...never let anybody you can't do something because you can if you really try. This story is an incredible teaching tool for our children and told in a way where as parents we can set our children's footsteps on the right path from the beginning.

By David,   From Fayetteville
I wouldn't call it a fairytale exactly, but I think that The Wizard of Oz is a great one because every child has a dream to live out their greatest adventures, even if other people say that it will get them into trouble. It also teaches you that you don't have to look for a faraway place to belong, as long as you have in your own backyard.

By kathy,   From west rutland

Pinocchio. The story revolves around Pinocchio learning to behave, rather than relying on looks, or being saved from the circumstances of one's life. (The moral of most fairy tales seems to be "Buck up. sure your life is miserable, but it could be worse.)

With two boys under the age of five, the favorite fairy tail in our house is the ugly duckling. I want them to know early on that beauty comes from within and that no one should be ridiculed for how they look. I also want them to stick up for those who are being picked on for reasons beyond their control.

By Art,   From Santa Anna

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say "The Nightmare Before Christmas". Yeah, yeah, I'm sure many parents out there will not agree, but I think that like Beauty And The Beast, NBC shows that just because you may look scary and dark on the outside does not mean you're that way on the inside. Jack Skellington was a gentle soul despite his skeleton grin, and his love for Sally and his dog Zero made him that much more human. So, there you go. :)

By Terry,   From Henry

Any of them where they don't "get married and live happily after". It makes girls believe that if they can just make it to the altar, everything will be all right. Boy is THAT a bad thing to believe!
But if I have to pick just one, it would be The Ugly Duckling. It teaches girls that, just because you aren't beautiful to SOME people, you are still beautiful to other people.

By RobKdude,   From Colchester
From so many favorites, perhaps "Finding Nemo" because it is an analogy to the current fast-paced environment we live in. Among the lessons learned are that fact we must persist beyond our real (or imagined) disabilities to success- there is no failure- only lack of persistence, as Nemo discovers that he can make it despite his "gimpy fin". Another is the true lesson that we never stop learning and that even in fatherhood, while the child does need protection from danger, you don't have to tell them so as this constant "be careful" barrage tends to reduce their encouragement. Instead, tell them "the world better watch out for you!" while YOU keep a lookout for sharks! The truth of the matter is that, coming into the tv room to watch my 4-year-old's expression as she laughed and giggled, even I got pulled into it! That's what I walked away with. Good luck to everyone in the contest!

By Michelle,   From San Francisco

Sleeping Beauty has always been my favorite fairy tale. First of all it has three fairies. And a really fabulous evil fairy with a bad temper. She has to be the best witch out of them all !! Then there is sweet Aurora who doesn't know she is a princess, and is doomed to prick her finger on a spinning wheel. And no amount of trickery can save her. Still true love conquers all and the handsome prince comes to the rescue with a kiss. You can't help the little tug at your heart.

And of course finally the prince found the real girl for whom the glass slipper fit perfectly !
