For parents, one of the most disheartening aspects of raising a child is seeing their kids teased by classmates. In recent years, bullying has been made especially complicated due to the growth in popularity of social networking websites, which makes it too easy for kids to be ridiculed through the internet. Dads should make a point to be on the look-out for signs of cyber bullying, and being tech savvy is a good way to be vigilant, the San Jose Mercury News reports.
The issue has been especially harped on in recent months, as there have been many widely publicized instances of children suffering severe emotional distress from virtual assaults. A group of parents and children in California, led by the organization People Acting in Community Together, recently came together to address the situation.
"So many children have come forward with stories about cyber bullying," Ann Brownwell, a parent and an organizer of the event, told the news source"that we wanted to create a forum for them to share first-hand accounts with school district personnel.
According to the National Crime Prevention Council, there are several way parents can help prevent cyber bullying. For one, keeping the family computer in a highly trafficked area will help make sure that kids are not being victimized. Additionally, having a frank discussion about the topic might also make kids more willing to come forward if they experience it.
