How to have a vacation that doesnWith April just around the corner, a father's fancy may turn to thoughts of spring break - and how to arrange a vacation for his family without breaking the bank.

First of all, if you plan to fly somewhere, make sure you do your research. Sometimes a package deal may seem like an easy way to organize everything, but may end up costing more than if you had booked each element separately.

A large variety of comparison websites can help you pick the right dates (peak versus off-peak) and some will even notify you if airfares drop below a certain price. If you're willing to take a chance, waiting until the last minute can result in bargains on hotels, car rentals and flights.

These days, gas prices are fairly reasonable, which makes a road trip an appealing alternative to flying. Plus, if you are single parenting, driving with your kids may offer an opportunity for the kind of relaxed chats that hurried home life does not afford.

Many families find a vacation spent close to home can be as rewarding as an exotic trip. Flex your parenting skills and take your kids on a camping trip at a nearby park. Or, if you prefer a different type of experience, a couple days spent at the science museum and the zoo can be educational, fun and very inexpensive.
