Spanking vs. not spanking: How do you handle discipline?

Fatherhood is full of many difficult decisions, especially when it comes to disciplining your children for acting out. Parents have varying opinions on the matter, ranging from standard 15-minute time-outs to grounding and chores.

When your kids are younger, it can be especially hard when considering the lessons you want to impart on them as a result of your punishment. This begs the question: to spank or not to spank?

No learning involved
According to Dr. Phil, you don't succeed in teaching when you use physical punishment on your children. Your goal is to instill a notion of self-discipline so that your kids learn the difference between right and wrong based on your system of values. These ideas will follow them through life and help shape who they become as adults.

Use logical punishments
Rather than strike your kids in any way, Parents magazine suggested that you equate misbehavior with negative - but logical - consequences. If your son spills his orange juice all over the kitchen floor, he has to mop it up and clean the room. If your daughter talks back to you, take away her TV privileges for the weekend and have her do homework quietly in her room.
