Being a female I will probably get harped for this, but here goes nothing;
I agree petty arguments should be avoided on BOTH sides, yes you too ladies. I and 5.5 months pregnant and I feel like a monster, I get angry all the time for no reason whatso ever. I feel depressed, ugly, tired, and excited at the same time. However, I acknowledge and apologize on a regular basis. I have a great man who really cares about me: but sometimes hits a point. Yes, sometimes we argue, or mostly at that point just walk away without talking to later come back to it. I dont try to blame him for it, and i explain it too him. Sometimes i tell him I'm angry and I dont know why, please give me space.
He doesnt have to, nor do I want him to admit to being wrong when hes not, that takes away from when he actually is. Similarly, I need to admit it when I am. Believe me we have issues, and sometimes he has no idea how to make me happy he says. I wish he would listen to me on that point though lol, its not his fault that Im not. My emotions are on a roller coaster, I cant explain it :-( But I know that he loves me, and he just has to remember that Im trying: and I have to remember that he is.
The point is that its not entirely anyone' s fault; but both of your responsibility for not just the baby's sake, but your relationship as well. I will admit that it feels like as a woman we have an unfair burden, but we also have a deeper connection with the little one :-)
ps. reading the posts from men helps women too, but guys try not to be so harsh. Were both so defensive of our respective sides when its a TEAM, it took two to make that baby!

You never hear pregnant women comparing their feelings to that of when they were a teenager. WHY? Because it's not the bl++dy same. If all you can do to connect with your partner is compare her feelings to those you felt when you were 16 (when you weren't growing a baby, having to give up a career or deal with a very un-emphathic fella) then I feel really sorry for her. My Finance is 3 months pregnant and she is both constantly starting arguments and then suggesting that I am harming the baby because she is upset. Obviously she is the one causing harm and she needs to learn to take responsibility for her actions and learn to control her hormones.

Women need to understand what men go through. My fiance and I moved to another state because I received a job opportunity. Everything was going good and then she got pregnant. I was as happy as can be, but then something changed. Every little thing I did was wrong and these little fights turned into huge fights. She became a totally different person and even though I would try to show support, tell her she's beautiful, buy her flowers and always rub her belly to show how excited I was. My fiance Is 5 months pregnant now, We get into an argument because I wanted her to come to my family reunion. It was my birthday, I do admit when she said no I did get a little upset. I believe in family Even if they did you wrong. The argument did not get heated until she decided to downgrade my side of the family while company was there. So in the end I wound up hurting her and her emotions. Now she has kicked me out of the house. I'm living in a motel and working hard everyday. I still have to make ends meet for my baby and my family with her. However once I left her older children moved back into our home. I'm supposed to return home in 3 days, but everytime I talk to her on the phone it sounds like she's going through more drama than when I was there. Her children is her children, she loves them and I care about them. But my child I'm going to love unconditionally. So returning home I don't know, I think I might have to stay out here until I get my own place, you know, stand as a man for my child so that she can be raised properly and maybe maybe I will be able to finally return back to my home with her and even her children. Because I love her and my baby the most. It does get lonely though, I do have feelings for at least having a woman around. But I will never cheat on her. But if things are not done in a timely manner I will go somewhere else and start another family and still take care of my baby. I love them both but moves have to be made. Also, I don't want our baby to grow up in a home without both parents living there helping her, supporting her, and caring about her and her future. Often we try to talk rationally about things before we fly off the handle, but a lot of mens attitude towards that approach sets us off.
Throughout my entire pregnancy, its been my partner who carries on & acts out the pregnancy. I can't say anything without hims flying off the rails. & heaven forbid me asking him to change anything for the sake of our child(smoking etc). Due to his attitude and behaviour i have cried everyday. Apparently its all me (according to him). But i know its not (I've even consulted proffessionals). So its not just the women. We dont expect to be treated like the queen of sheeba(we don't even want to) we just want to feel as though you love & support us. What we throw at you is nothing compared to what we throw at ourselves. And there's nothing worse than having your partner there, but still being alone. It bloody hurts.
I know its hard on you men too. You have hormonal changes too, & have a lot of things to deal with but magnify what your going thru (its still not even close to what she's going thru).
In regards to a pregnancy being 50/50, you've gotta be joking! Have the baby growing inside you for 4.5 months, then literally take on half the labour,& breastfeed your baby from your own breastmilk... then
it'll be 50/50. Until then, just be there for her. All we want is your support & understanding. If we don't have that, of course we're gonna be harpies, you don't care enough to make an effort, so why should we?
Just a final point, if mum is in a bad emotional place when pregnant (& there's a breakdown in the relationship) she's actually more likely to have post natal depression. My wife is 8 months pregnant and a complete bitch. She yells at screams at me at the top of her lungs anytime she feels fit. She even punches and spits if she wants. This advice is terrible in that it goes much too far. Avoiding petty quarrels is MORE important during the pregnancy but taking the blame for everything is not the answer. This will only set a precedence that will continue once the baby is born. It is not healthy to be in a relationship where everything that goes wrong is the fault of one person. Men can carry a lot but expecting them to take the blame for every wrong is absurd. Women need to learn to control their raging emotions, understand that your husband didn't change over night -- they did. Avoid the little stuff but don't let your wife abuse you. All the women that are raving about this are morons, plain and simple.

I can't help but notice that it is all the women who love this advice. At the same time I wonder how they can remain in a relationship with a guy who is a doormat? You really want someone who does not voice their opinions for fear of upsetting you? And where is the medical evidence that an argument will hurt the fetus? I do what I can period to avoid arguments, but I think this advice is idiotic. Have some self-respect.

It is the responsibility of BOTH parties to create a peaceful environment for the baby to grow in. Being pregnant does not give a woman a nine month pass to behave as she sees fit. If the beahviour is disrespectful then address it everytime. Taking the blame for everything for nine months is the stupidest advice I have ever heard, what you are doing there my friend is setting precedent for the rest of your life/marriage. I see so many unhappy husbands and its always the ones that are the yes men, the quiet ones, the ones that think not arguing gives them an easy life that are the most unhappy. Stand up and fight. Men have hormones too, dont use them as an excuses to act anyway you like and then wonder why you end up with a vacant eyed, yes dear husband. Woman too often kick the shit out of guys and turn them into husks of their former selves. Although, actually its the guy who is most at fault for allowing a person to walk all over them. Fight everything, only by making it known that acting unreasonabely will result in an exchange will people build respect for each other and treat each other as equals. Being pregnant should allow some cooling off and forgiveness of craziness but a reasonable amount. NOT 9 months of acting like the Queen of Sheba.
'it takes a real man to bite his tonuge' ??? No it takes a real man to have the perseverence and effort it requires to tackle each and every argument with the same vigour as the last. Never giving up. I do this because I love my wife and I want us to remain equals. Once dominance is established from either partner it is the end of the relationship.

Really enjoyed the article! I think that if a petty fight can be avoided, why not try and do what we can to prevent it? This is a good tip for any couple, not only during pregnancy, but in a relationship/marriage in general. It makes life much easier, and your relationship that much more enjoyable. I think that many people forget that the reason we choose to have relationships, is because we enjoy one another; not because we are required to be with someone day in and day out. If you cannot be happy with someone, and cannot avoid fighting and arguing, then don't be in a relationship! To Ned, from Starsky; Don't blame all pregnant women for your wife's behavior. It sounds like you may have already been having problems prior to the pregnancy, and there was some verbal and physical abuse involved. It should not be excused, women can be abusive too. If you are in an abusive relationship... plain and simple; get out, or seek help! I do not think that the article was indicating that anyone should have to accept any sort of abuse from their partner or spouse, pregnant or not. In general, the article is just a reminder that there are ways to avoid the stress of everyday arguing, and why not try harder to do so during a sensitive time such as pregnancy? It will only be better for the relationship, and more importantly, for the growing little person :)

Thankgod there is something that makes sense out there! , My ex was just so incompotent and started arguments without taking any responsibility for his actions, blaming me for the way HE reacted. i understand it must be so hard on men to sit back and watch their wives/girllfriends turn into these hormonal monsters, but it takes a real man to bite his tounge and step up to the mark. Their there to help, not to hinder. brilliant adivce there!

i have tried my hardest to stop arguing with my wife, its become impossible to communicate in any way. everything i do is wrong and everything i dont do is wrong, breathing is wrong, working is wrong, just everything a man does is wrong, and when i plain and simple am not in the wrong and have to stand there listening to her shout scream kick and slap me without an escape route do you honestly think im gonna stand there and not shout back, shes pregnant, that does not stop her from being human.. after listening to 8months of abuse and disrespect towards myself and her complaining about everything every 5 minutes i have no more sympathy for pregnant women. you women have all the help available under the sun, we have nothing. you have us and what we do is provide the very world in which you live, we deserve just as much help. you say we dont understand, we understand perfectly we listen to everyword spoken, we listen to every moan and groan, we listen to every single thing, its about time you started to listen to us.. we are men, we have emotions, we have feelings and they are just as strong and as powerful as yours. everything in pregnancy is 50/50 but we only get 1% of our share, so do us a favour, give us a break!!!

I"m so glad I got a chance to read your article. I"m 4 months pregnant and my husband is really starting to irritate the hell out of me. It often times seems that hes the one pregnant!
