It’s that time of the year again when every family in North America sets out to celebrate the biggest birthday party of the year—Independence Day. There are monuments to travel to, afternoon parades to join in, and beach parties to go to.
We hope you and your family can take the best of the picks.
Honestly, it was a tie up between Boston and New Orleans; we went in for the latter. This year the festival (named ‘go 4th on the River’) is going to get ballistic with fireworks (best viewed from New Orleans’ new Jazz Walk of Fame) and live music concerts. There’s a free ferry to take from Canal Street that goes straight to the French Market and that’s where the fun is.
Number two is definitely Boston offering plenty of tours, free concerts and historical enactments for the kids to enjoy.
Next on our list comes Miami with its Latino style celebrations and fireworks at nightfall over Biscayne Bay.
Free admission to the week long Chicago Festival at Grant Park places it pretty high on our list of celebrations. Kids and adults can unleash their taste buds upon Chicago specialties such as cheesecake and deep-dish pizza.
If it's canon fire you want to impress your kids with, then it's off to the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. The fireworks over the Washington Monument promise to be spectacular.
The Lincoln memorial is close-by and will give children an opportunity to marvel at the president’s larger-than-life profile. You can rest your steps near the reflecting pool across the Washington Monument.
If it’s more of a retreat you're planning, then Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard are the places to get-away from it all. Then there’re the waterfront barbeques and the Old Whaling Church—places where nostalgia and cooking serve up the perfect American feast.
Going for big? Then you can’t beat Mount Rushmore. Just follow the flag trail to the country’s grandest tributes to the carved visages of our country’s greatest forebears. See if the kids can get all the names right and then head off for special shows at the memorial’s amphitheater.
It's history celebrated with a capital H at Philadelphia—the place where it all happened 200 years ago. Make sure you don’t miss out on viewing the iconic Liberty Bell.
The week-long San Diego County Fair at the Del Mar Fairgrounds is sure to rock your world this Independence day. Expect barbeques, bonfires, and a grand after-dark pyrotechnics show for the whole family.
