Prepare for the delivery room

The days when dad sat in the waiting room chewing his nails while the baby was born are over. As a great dad, you should be in the room watching the miracle of birth even if you are not very comfortable with the idea. During labor, your spouse will need your support both literally and emotionally. And it doesn't matter how squeamish you think you are about blood. If you miss it, you will always regret it.

These are some ways to allay your fears and prepare to participate in the birth of your baby:

  • Firstly, accept your fears regarding the delivery room as quite normal.

  • Do your homework. Read up on pregnancy and the birthing process.

  • Familiarize yourself with what actually happens inside the delivery room by watching videos or DVDs.

  • Talk with other dads who have been through it; they might have felt exactly the way you are doing now, and may give you some handy tips.

  • Discuss your situation honestly with your spouse. Tell her exactly what you are feeling. Remember, that being there with her may mean a lot for her.

At the end of it however, if you are still not up to it, that’s okay. Go along to the hospital, and wait outside the delivery room. But, at the earliest opportunity, go in and congratulate your partner, and hold your baby in your arms.
