Martin Sheen has had many leading roles in Hollywood and is well known for his sensitive portrayal as the American President in the popular television series “The West Wing.”
Born Ramon Estevez in Dayton, Ohio, to an Irish mother and Spanish immigrant father, he was the seventh among ten children. Sheen had always wanted to be an actor, and much to his father’s chagrin, he borrowed money from a priest and moved to New York. He changed his last name to the “billboard-friendly” Sheen one so he would not be typecast because of his Hispanic name.
Sheen first became a father at age 22 with son Emilio’s birth. His relationship with his first born is more brotherly than paternal. His second son Ramon is his personal assistant.
In 1970, Sheen moved to Hollywood to follow fame and fortune. When Sheen collapsed of a heart attack due to prolonged drinking problems while shooting in Philippines, his third son Charlie, then aged 10, helped him recoup and a firm bond was established between them.
Later, Charlie Sheen at 25, notorious for his drug abuse and wayward ways, had to be rushed to hospital. He escaped from the rehab center. Sheen had him arrested. He went public with his son’s drug and behavior issues and frequent rehab visits. Sheen stood like a rock behind his son and his love for his son helped put Charlie back on his feet. They have since co-starred in several movies and are best buddies.
Martin Sheen resides with his wife of 40 years, Janet, and their four children, and grand children. To quote Sheen, he's has learned to let go, and as a result, he is the patriarch of a well-knit and emotionally well-bonded family.
