Dealing with nosebleeds

Nosebleeds occur during pregnancy because of the increased amount of blood in your spouse’s body. This leads to ruptures in the tiny blood vessels in her nose. If your spouse’s nose bleeds, there is no reason to worry. Nosebleeds are hardly serious. They can, however, be rather annoying.

These are some simple practices to prevent your spouse’s nosebleeds:

  • Drying of the mucous membranes inside the nose aggravates nosebleeds. Installing a humidifier, by increasing the moisture in the air, can help reduce nosebleeds.
  • Ensure that your spouse drinks adequate amount of water. This will again prevent mucous membranes from becoming dry.
  • Prevent your spouse from blowing her nose too vigorously, and sneezing while keeping the mouth open. This can help prevent nosebleeds.
  • Using a lubricant such as petroleum jelly, or saline nasal sprays and drops, can also help relieve her nosebleeds.
  • Vitamin C is known to fortify bodily tissues. Adding Vitamin C rich foods such as citrus fruits, tomatoes, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, broccoli, or kohlrabi to your spouse’s diet may help prevent  nosebleeds

Simple remedies to stop nosebleeds:

  • Sitting straight with the head held high and applying pressure on the nose for about 10 minutes
  • Gently rubbing some ice or a cold pack on the nose while pinching the nose upwards may help the blood to coagulate and stop bleeding.
