Although the premise of a pampered pooch learning life lessons as she makes her way from Tijuana to California may not sound like a hoot to the average father, Beverly Hills Chihuahua sets itself up as a fun movie the whole family can enjoy.
In the tradition of Babe and Firehouse Dog, this Disney film manages to bring the concerns of a talking animal to life.
The plot centers on Chloe, a tiny dog who is spoiled rotten by her owner and looks down on other canines of a lower social standing.
When, during a vacation to Mexico, Chloe is stolen by men involved in dog fighting, she escapes and ends up forging a meaningful friendship with a former police dog who is determined to help her get home.
There is very little in this movie that a father could object to. Although violence is occasionally threatened, it is never carried out.
And by the end of the film, Chloe has expanded her view of the world and learned about her ancient Aztec roots. As kids’ films go, it may be classified as a harmless diversion.
