New campaign aims to strengthen father and daughter bond

Daughters are meant to be daddy’s little girl, but in reality it is not always that simple.

As increasing numbers of parents separate, some dads can become distant from their daughters, both physically and emotionally.

Now, journalist Ed Gordan is doing his bit to strengthen the father and daughter bond in American families.

He has launched ‘Daddy’s Promise: A Lifetime of Love’, a year-long campaign targeted at black fathers, the Associated Press reports.

Although he lives in New York, Mr Gordon sees his daughter Taylor every other week and sometimes speaks to her up to three times a day, just to see how she is doing.

He says that young women can suffer if they do not have a strong relationship with their father, telling the newswire that studies show women who have good relations with their dad "follow a certain success path".

The journalist has come up with a number of tips for maintaining and good father and daughter bond, starting with making the most of time spent together.

He also suggested that dads share their mistakes with their girls so they can learn from them, as well as being confident about when to say no and act as a father rather than a friend.

Mr Gordon’s campaign follows a recent speech by Barack Obama in which he chastised black fathers for not living up to their responsibilities.
