Prepare to be a new dad

Many dads are a bit confused about their role in their spouses’ pregnancy. If you are one of them, here are some tips to tell you what you can do:

Find out about childbirth: Learn as much as you can about the process of pregnancy and childbirth. Visit the library and read books. Browse the internet. Watch videos. These will help you know more about becoming a father.

Keep her medical appointments: Accompany your partner to the doctor when she goes for her routine visits.

Support her decisions: Respect your partner’s decisions and support the choices she makes.

Plan together: Discuss the baby’s arrival in advance with your spouse. Help her prepare a list of things you both need to accomplish. Go shopping to buy the things you will require before you bring the baby home. Plan and decorate the baby’s room together.

Help your spouse maintain her health: Encourage your spouse to adopt healthy practices such as eating well, maintaining a fitness regime, and resting adequately. Motivate her to give up smoking and alcohol. If you smoke, consider giving it up.

Continue your lovemaking: If you and your partner both desire it, there is no reason why you should not continue having sex while she is pregnant. However, consult your doctor first, just to be sure. If you choose not to have sexual intercourse—or your doctor prohibits it for medical reasons—you can still continue to enjoy physical closeness with your spouse.
