Watching television – a no-no or a nurturing tool?

There are plenty of crusaders out there who say that TV is nothing but a brain-washing machine for our kids. Although we don't want our children to become couch potatoes, there are some advantages to befriending the boob tube. Sure, you might want to set limits to what your little one can watch, but there are also some great reasons to allow him or her to indulge in TV.

Culture. Television can give young ones some early exposure to cultures that might have been completely unknown to them. Even if it's not an educational program your child is watching, the interactions between characters can actually allow them to develop some insight about social behavior.

Motivation. Although it might be hard to contemplate your child being inspired by the power of media, it's known to happen – take Harry Potter for example. Any kid who watches those movies will likely be itching to read every book in the series. Even though you might prefer for them to absorb some useful material, beggars can't be choosers. Reading anything is better than nothing at all.

Family time. TV is also a great way to gather every member of the family in one room. Make it a weekly tradition to watch a particular show that your whole family will enjoy. This also leaves plenty of opportunity for bonding.
