Empowering Children with Choices with Richard Jack III

August 17, 2025 by Paul Banas

Today, we have the pleasure of interviewing Richard Jack III, a trailblazer in children’s emotional and behavioral development. Stay tuned as we uncover how to better connect with and guide the next generation, equipping them with the tools they need to navigate a rapidly changing world. Let’s get started!

In this episode, you will be able to:

  1. Learn about empowering children through informed choices.
  2. Understand the significance of structure and discipline in child development.
  3. Explore the benefits and challenges of intervention programs.
  4. Discover practical life skills teaching in modern education.
  5. Recognize gender-specific differences in education.

Hey there, Paul here from the Great Dad Talks podcast! In our latest episode, I had the absolute pleasure of diving into some transformative discussions with Richard Jack III. Richard is a seasoned expert in educational and behavioral programs—armed with a military background and deep insights gained from years of school counseling. The conversation was as enlightening as it gets, and I thought, why not share some key takeaways with you here?

Challenges for Today’s Youth

One major theme we tackled was the unique challenges kids face today. Richard emphasized the need to shift away from outdated child-rearing methods. He succinctly put it, “Children today need a voice, but that doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be discipline and support.”

Technology-induced isolation and a lack of social skills development are real concerns. Richard noted, “We’ve got to address the isolation caused by technology, which is really stripping away the essential development of social skills in our children.”

The Gentlemen by Choice Program

Richard co-founded the “Gentlemen by Choice” program back in 2012, initially with a former school dean. Here are the five pillars the program rests on:

  • Personal Development
  • Leadership
  • Image
  • Financial Management
  • Etiquette

Teaching Life Skills Beyond Academics

In our discussion, Richard highlighted something we don’t usually think about—teaching practical life skills such as proper communication and respect. “Equipping young people with skills not typically taught in schools ensures they can present themselves well in all walks of life,” Richard explained, underscoring the importance of these skills.

Offering Choices over Compulsion

Richard’s perspective on giving children choices rather than dictating their actions really resonated with me. He mentioned, “By empowering children to make informed decisions with the right tools and understanding, we prepare them to navigate life’s challenges more effectively.”

Program Benefits and Challenges

While the program boasts of several benefits, like improved attitudes and behaviors among students, Richard candidly shared the complexities they face. “Mixed messages between school and home environments can lead to confusion for the child,” he acknowledged. This highlights the crucial need for consistency in expectations and behavior standards.

The Impact of Societal Changes

We also delved into how loosening societal standards and discipline lead to chaos and increased discipline issues in schools. “There’s a real need to reestablish some of these foundational values if we’re going to see long-term positive changes,” Richard stated.

Practical Life Skills

Interestingly, our talk extended into practical life skills like etiquette and financial literacy, often missing in school curricula. Richard provided valuable resources for parents and educators: “Psychological safety and classroom strategies help improve connections and foster an environment conducive to learning.”

Understanding Learning Differences

Finally, understanding inherent gender-specific communication and learning styles was another enlightening part of our chat. Richard shared, “Boys often use fewer words and tend to communicate more directly. Respecting these differences is crucial in effectively educating and raising them.”

Key Advice from Richard Jack III:

  • Empower Choices:Provide children with the tools to make informed decisions.
  • Structured Foundation:Establish early expectations to shape values and discipline.
  • Consistency:Maintain consistent expectations and behavioral standards.
  • Teach Practical Skills:Focus on skills like etiquette and financial literacy.
  • Understand Gender Differences:Acknowledge and respect different learning styles.

To wrap it up, the insights from this episode were profound and thought-provoking. Richard’s approach to combining structured discipline with empowering choice strikes a perfect balance that can help shape well-rounded individuals. I’m incredibly appreciative of the wisdom he shared, and I hope you find these takeaways as valuable as I did.

Until next time, keep nurturing those great dad vibes!
