Hey there, fellow dads! Paul here from Great Dad Talks. I recently had the pleasure of hosting an incredibly insightful episode with Leroy Slanzi, an educational expert and principal from Canada. Leroy shared a wealth of knowledge on everything from fundraising for school equipment to the challenges of modern parenting and education. Here’s a deep dive into our conversation, complete with some of his powerful quotes and actionable advice for us parents.

Fundraising and Resource Allocation

One of the highlights of our discussion was Leroy’s successful fundraising effort to provide field hockey equipment for schools. These kinds of initiatives are crucial, especially given the budget constraints many schools face.

“We managed to fundraise and provide equipment for field hockey, which has been in the school for 2-3 years now,” Leroy shared. The impact of such efforts is significant, but it also highlights the limited budgets that schools work with.

Budget Constraints and Parent Engagement

Leroy elaborated on the challenges schools face when reallocating funds: “Reallocating funds often means taking away from other departments like special education, trades, or sports.” This underscores the importance of parental involvement in budgetary decisions and advocating for increased education funding.

  • Vote for Increased Education Funding: Make your voice heard by voting.
  • Participate in School Surveys: Help shape school policies and programs through feedback.

The School Approval Process

Implementing new initiatives in schools isn’t as straightforward as one might think. Leroy’s experience with getting approval for therapy dogs underscores the complexities involved.

“To implement initiatives like therapy dogs, I had to seek approval from the school district and parents. It’s a checks-and-balances system,” he explained. This system ensures that all stakeholders are on board, maintaining a balanced approach.

Differences in School Systems

We also delved into the differences between public and private schools. “Private schools have more autonomy in decision-making and parent involvement,” Leroy noted, highlighting that parents in Canada can shop around for schools if there is available space.

Key Advice for Parents

Leroy shared invaluable advice on various topics, particularly in navigating the digital age and fostering healthy habits in children. Here are some of his key recommendations:

  • Teach Kids Self-Regulation: Avoid imposing external controls on devices.
  • Encourage Open Communication: Discuss taboo topics such as sex and drugs openly with your children.
  • Support Children’s Passions: Help your kids discover their interests from a young age, which can keep them away from technology.

“Restrictive measures can backfire, leading to increased curiosity and secretive behaviors,” Leroy emphasized. He believes that preparing children to handle boredom and investing time in activities like playing Simon Says can be far more effective.

Parenting in the Digital Age

The issue of technology use among kids is ever-present. Leroy shared his approach, including not imposing parental restrictions or providing gaming systems until his kids were 14. Both of his children own cell phones and use social media but can disconnect for activities like sports and socializing.

“Moderation and structured use are crucial when introducing technology to children,” Leroy pointed out. He also stressed the importance of fostering intrinsic motivation before exposing kids to potentially addictive technologies.

Instilling Perseverance and Grit

Leroy also emphasized the need for perseverance and grit. He shared, “The importance of instilling perseverance and grit in children is undeniable, but it’s a challenging task.” He believes that today’s children require explanations for decisions and boundaries, a stark contrast to how many of us were raised.

Resources and Further Reading

Leroy has authored books that could be a valuable resource for any parent or educator:

  • “Emotional Schools”: Addresses the mental health crisis in schools and offers solutions.
  • “And Breathe”: Provides 50 breathing strategies to help manage emotional and stress-related issues.

Play, Interests, and Technology

Engaging with children’s interests, like Play-Doh for six-year-olds, can be a gateway to other activities. Leroy stressed, “Creating a connection between parent and child helps build stability, manners, and respect.”

Final Thoughts

Leroy’s insights were not only eye-opening but also practical. From managing technology use and fostering intrinsic motivation to successful fundraising and understanding budget constraints, there’s a lot we can learn and apply in our parenting journey.

Remember, being intentional in how we support our children’s passions and setting clear boundaries can make a world of difference.
