Hey, it’s Paul Banas from Great Dad Talks. In my latest episode, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Colin Kingsmill, a seasoned leadership coach with a wealth of experience in international real estate development. Our conversation provided some insightful perspectives on resilience—what it means, how to build it, and how to model it, especially as fathers.

Overcoming Fear to Build Resilience

One of the first things Colin and I talked about was the fundamental connection between fear and resilience. As Colin mentioned:

“Fear comes in so many different colors. It’s not just one thing; it’s resistance, and hope is even fear disguised.”

Social media and the 24-hour news cycle amplify that fear, making it more challenging to step out of our comfort zones. Building resilience, therefore, starts with overcoming these fears. Colin recommends mastering the art of failure as a first step:

“One of the first steps in becoming more resilient is really mastering the art of failure and recognizing that over time, you can break something so that what can come next can be bigger and better.”

Micro Steps Over Massive Leaps

Colin emphasized the importance of taking micro-steps rather than aiming for lofty, often unattainable goals. He shared:

“Small acts of kindness or small acts of purpose or intention can have a huge ripple effect. And you don’t need to be a star NFL player to change the world.”

I can relate to this, having led groups of men over 55 searching for meaning. At any age, focusing on small, impactful actions can be incredibly fulfilling.

Mindfulness and Its Role in Resilience

A significant portion of our conversation centered on mindfulness and meditation as tools for resilience:

“Mindfulness changes your perception, judgment, reactivity, and analysis. It allows you to see life and every moment with a clear perspective.”

Colin stressed that a consistent mindfulness practice can help you bounce back from adversity by dissolving negativity and helping you remain clear-headed. He also recommended introducing small rituals into your daily routine to help maintain that mindfulness.

Practical Tips for Building Resilience

Here are some key pieces of advice that Colin shared to help build resilience:

– Practice Mindfulness and Meditation: Regular mindfulness can alter your perspective and help you handle daily challenges more effectively.

– Introduce Small Rituals: Simple actions like keeping a meaningful object nearby can serve as reminders to maintain clarity.

– Create a Buddy System: Don’t try to do it alone. Having a support system can make a huge difference, especially for men who traditionally find it harder to communicate their emotions.

– Say “No” and Set Boundaries: Learning to respect your needs and set firm boundaries is crucial for maintaining your mental health and resilience.

The Impact of Nutrition

Interestingly, Colin also highlighted the often-overlooked connection between nutrition and mental health:

“The fuel sources for all of us are critical for our resilience and confidence. Poor nutrition can erode your mental health, leading to fear, anxiety, and even panic attacks.”

This is a reminder that what you eat can significantly affect how you feel and how resilient you are in facing life’s challenges.

Our conversation was action-packed and full of practical tips for anyone looking to build resilience. From mastering the art of failure to mindfulness and proper nutrition, Colin’s advice covers a broad array of approaches to becoming more resilient.
