Hi there, it’s Paul Banas from Great Dad Talks, and this week, I had the pleasure of diving deep into the world of coaching and positive intelligence with the inspiring Coach Pete Armstrong. If you’re unfamiliar with Great Dad Talks, it’s a space where we support fathers to help them provide better experiences for their families. Our latest episode focuses on the remarkable changes positive intelligence can foster, both at home and in the workplace. Let’s break down the key takeaways from this enlightening conversation.

Starting the Coaching Journey

Pete began his coaching journey back in 2018, and what started as a side hustle quickly revealed itself to be a transformative experience. His initial foray into coaching came with its fair share of uncertainty, but the impact on his own life was undeniable. “Coaching was awesome as it changed my life,” Pete shared. His journey took an incredible turn when he delved into positive intelligence in the fall of 2020—something he credits with changing his life forever.

Understanding Positive Intelligence

Positive intelligence isn’t just a set of practices—it’s a life-altering approach rooted in neuroscience and performance science. Pete highlighted its profound impact: “It helped me understand the judge and how it was controlling my life…the power of empathy for me in my experience it was the gateway to forgiveness.” This empathy, in turn, significantly improved his relationships, especially with his kids.

Key Practices of Positive Intelligence

During our conversation, Pete and I explored how positive intelligence works and the science backing it. Here are some essential practices and insights:

  • Identifying the Judge: Understanding how your inner critic or ‘judge’ operates.
  • Recognizing Saboteurs: Becoming aware of the saboteurs, like the Stickler, Hyperachiever, and Restless, that sabotage your well-being.
  • Cultivating Empathy and Self-love: “The more we can have that as fathers, the more we can give it to our kids,” Pete emphasized.
  • Daily Mindfulness Exercises: Engaging in activities that boost mental fitness and reduce stress.

Applying Positive Intelligence in Real Life

At Home

Pete shared powerful anecdotes, illustrating how positive intelligence made him a better dad. By practicing empathy and self-love, he observed noticeable changes in his patience and judgment: “I was more patient. I was less judgmental.” These qualities helped mitigate the stressors that used to interfere with his connection to his children.

Key Advice for Dads:

  • Empathy: Prioritize empathy for yourself to extend it to your children.
  • Patience: Reducing judgment not only improves your relationship but also sets a positive example.
  • Daily Practices: Engage in mental fitness exercises to better manage stress.

At Work

Positive intelligence isn’t just for improving family life; it translates effectively into the professional world as well. Pete offered an example of a client, a business owner, who saw noticeable changes in his team dynamics through empathy. “He would have typically told his anxious manager to get his s h I t together, but now he empathized and saw the relationship blossom.”

Key Advice for Managers:

  • Practice Empathy: Empathy with yourself can lead to more empathetic leadership.
  • Identify Saboteurs: Recognize traits like the Stickler and Restless which might hinder professional relationships.
  • Daily Mindfulness: Implement exercises that reduce daily stress and enhance productivity.

Integrating Positive Intelligence into Coaching

In our discussion about coaching, Pete shared, “Positive intelligence helps men develop a strong sense of self-empathy, which most men know the word but don’t fully resonate with.” This program doesn’t only help in personal growth but shapes better leaders and more connected fathers.

The Structure of the Program

Our positive intelligence course runs for six weeks and includes:

  • Understanding the Judge and Saboteurs: Identifying personal mental blocks.
  • Group Coaching: Facilitating open, honest conversations about personal and professional challenges.
  • Weekly Videos and App Support: Resources to keep participants on track.

Final Thoughts

Positive intelligence is more than just a philosophy; it’s a practical, scientifically backed approach that can transform your life. Whether you’re looking to improve your family relationships or become a more effective leader, the lessons from positive intelligence offer lasting benefits. Reflecting on our conversation, it’s evident that Pete Armstrong’s journey and insights provide a valuable roadmap for any father looking to make meaningful changes.
