Welcome back, dads! In our latest episode of Great Dad Talks, I had the pleasure of speaking with Rahz Slaughter, a remarkable guest who dedicates his life to working with teens. Rahz’s journey began with his own struggles during his teenage years, where he faced challenges due to a lack of male role models, physical disabilities, and dyslexia. His story is not just an inspiration but a treasure trove of advice for all parents navigating the complexities of raising teenagers. Let’s dive into some key takeaways from our uplifting conversation.

The Teen Experience and the Role of Parents

  • Rahz Slaughter has a deep understanding of the teen experience, having been there himself. He shared, “I lacked a male role model during my teenage years and felt lost. It’s what drives my passion to help other teens today.” Here are some insights he provided:
  • Changing Parent-Child Dynamics: As teens grow, their relationships with parents evolve. It’s essential to adapt to these changes with empathy and understanding.
  • Challenges with Personalities: Every teen is unique. Recognizing and respecting different personalities can mitigate conflicts and build stronger connections.
  • Struggles with Academics and Bullying: Rahz highlighted the importance of understanding individual learning styles, addressing root causes of academic challenges, and distinguishing between genuine bullying and ordinary conflicts.

Addressing and Understanding Bullying

We delved deep into the issue of bullying, a critical concern for many parents today. Rahz emphasized the importance of clarity when dealing with bullying:

  • Differentiating Between Facts and Stories: “Teach teens to understand the difference between facts and stories. It helps them deal with bullying more effectively.”
  • Empowering Kids: Educate children on what bullying really is and encourage self-awareness. “We should empower kids to navigate challenges themselves with confidence and resilience,” Rahz advised.
  • Parent Involvement: Actively listen to your children and validate their feelings. Parental support plays a crucial role in shaping their ability to handle adversity.

Managing Defiant Behavior

One topic that resonated deeply with parents is managing defiant behavior. Rahz Slaughter introduced a practical 3-step process:

  1. Recalibration: Adjust your approach as a parent to align with desired outcomes.
  2. Understanding Tonality: Be mindful of the tone you use when addressing your child’s behavior.
  3. Monitoring Parental Behavior: Remember, your actions set an example. Demonstrate the behavior you wish to see in your children.

He stressed, “Changing your beliefs about your parenting style is essential for achieving the outcomes you desire within your family.”

Personality-Based Parenting

We discussed the personality parenting method, a revolutionary approach to understanding and connecting with your child based on their personality assessment. Initially, we were skeptical about testing methodologies, but Rahz highlighted their potential:

  • Enhancing Connections: “Understanding your child’s personality can reduce conflicts and build stronger parent-child bonds,” Rahz shared.
  • Self-Awareness: These assessments increase self-awareness for both parents and children, providing valuable insights into each other’s perspectives.

Building Resilience and a Growth Mindset

Rahz emphasized the importance of resilience and a growth mindset for both parents and children:

  • Lead by Example: “As fathers, we need to lead by example and provide our children with tools to overcome struggles.”
  • Intentional Parenting: Seek out tools and resources like podcasts, coaching, and books to build resilience—a crucial trait for both you and your children.
  • Focus on Strengths: Recognize and nurture your child’s strengths, providing positive reinforcement. Allow them to “fail forward” as part of their learning process.

Conclusion

Finally, I shared my thoughts on visioning and goal-setting. Rahz and I agreed on the importance of guiding teens to focus on short-term goals and connecting with them through activities they enjoy. “Engage with teens based on their interests rather than their gender,” Rahz recommended.
