Treating Depression

Psychotherapy, especially cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal therapy, is an effective treatment for depression to date. This is usually enough for mild to moderate depression. In severe cases, however, special medications, and counseling may be required along with psychotherapy.

The therapist usually tries to understand your child, his family, his social group, and the environment that could cause depression in the kid. The therapist may interview you, and the child for family history and other indicators. There are standard tests to diagnose the causes of depression.

Sometimes, counseling of parents is as essential as that of the child. Treatment of associated conditions may be required if these are also diagnosed in your kid. The therapist may also prescribe medications to treat depression and other disorders.
