The weather is warm, the days are longer and everywhere you look people are lacing up their sneakers and going for a jog. For many people the spring means marathon season, pick-up basketball games and a time to exercise.
But, if you’re like many fathers out there, the invasion of the joggers may just come as a reminder that you can no long fit into your college track shorts, and your waistband isn’t getting any smaller.
Still other dads find that they’re so worn out by their work and home responsibilities that making it from breakfast to the Tonight Show without taking a nap is an athletic performance in its own right.
To you office Olympians out there, we offer a few words of advice. Here are the top four ways to "exercise" without breaking a sweat.
1.) Not all athletes have to be athletic. If you can’t jog down to your mailbox without doubling over – a sight far scarier for your mailman than your barking dog – maybe basketball, football and Frisbee aren’t right for you. Try a game of golf, an afternoon bocce match, or a scintillating round of shuffleboard. When anyone asks what you’ve been up to, the response is "Playing sports."
2.) Play fetch with your kids. Get the youngsters involved and head out to the backyard with a ball of your choosing. The concept is simple – while you sit in the shade, your 6-year-old burns energy like a supernova chasing after your lobs.
3.) Forget marathons – stick to telethons.
4.) Competitive eating is a sport. Anyone who has seen the 4th of July Coney Island hot dog eating contest knows that serious athletes don’t have to spend all day in the gym. They can, instead, spend all day between the kitchen and the bathroom.
