Expert: Parenting skills influence kids’ achievement

The style of parenting skills employed by a father or mother can significantly affect a child’s success at school, child development researchers say.

They identify four categories of parenting: authoritative, authoritarian, permissive and neglectful, the Morning News reports.

Moms and dads who are authoritative mix love with discipline to raise children who are prepared to excel academically, according to Professor Jelani Mandara, who teaches human development at Northwestern University.

He suggested that employing different parenting techniques could help close the achievement gap between girls and boys, as there is evidence that each gender may develop differently depending on how they are treated at home.

This parenting advice could provide the perfect excuse for dads to increase the amount of father and son bonding time scheduled each week.

Recent figures reported by the National Center for Health Statistics revealed that 18 percent of boys aged between four and 17 have a parent who has sought help from a healthcare provider or school employee regarding their child’s behavioral problems.
