Everyone knows that taking care of a newborn can be exhausting and demanding, but twins are double the trouble.

Trying to ensure both are given equal attention, trying to prevent them from waking each other up and negotiating a double buggy round the mall can test the nerves of any mother or father.

Help is at hand however, in the form of advice from the American Academy of Family Physicians.

It spoke to HealthDay News to offer parenting advice to moms and dads handling not one, but two bundles of joy.

Firstly, it reminds parents that they are not alone. The organization suggests finding other parents of twins to talk to, or joining a group.

It also suggests that parents are not too hard on themselves and grab every opportunity they can find to rest.

Spending time alone with each twin can help them to establish their own individual identity, according to the Academy, while reading to and speaking to them regularly will help to avert the speech problems that sometimes affect twins.

Finally, it notes that "it's normal to feel that taking care of twins is too much to manage. But remind yourself that you'll eventually work it all out".
