The last weeks of her pregnancy will typically be physically and mentally stressful for your spouse. You could consider arranging for her to have a prenatal massage.

Prenatal massage, also known as pregnancy massage, is a therapeutic massage technique for expecting mothers. It helps relieve the physical and mental stress associated with pregnancy and prepares the body for delivery. Do consult your spouse’s obstetrician first, to find out if it is okay for her to have the massage.

Benefits of prenatal massage

  • Soothes sore joints and muscles in the body and relieves backaches and pelvic pain

  • Reduces swellings in the hands and feet

  • Improves blood circulation in the body

  • Prepares muscles, such as the pelvic muscles, for delivery

  • Relieves insomnia and helps the expecting mom to relax and sleep well

  • Helps to reduce stress hormones released during pregnancy

  • Improves digestion and relives symptoms of gas and nausea

  • Provides emotional support to the to-be mom

Prenatal massage is not recommended in the following cases:

  • If the mother is diabetic

  • If she suffers from any contagious diseases

  • If she has fever or vomiting

  • If she suffers from high blood pressure

  • If she experiences symptoms of morning sickness

  • If she develops preeclampsia
