Gift ideas for Outdoorsy Dads

June 17, 2010 by Paul Banas Leave a Comment

Father’s Day is this Sunday and if you’re anything like me, you’ve waited until the last minute to find a gift. Good news is we’re here to help. If you have a dad that likes to spend time outdoors, check out the following suggestions. Your local outdoor store will likely carry many of these items, or you can easily find them online with the links provided. Most retailers would be happy to ship overnight so that gear arrives in time for dad’s big day.

Kelty FC 3.0 Child Carrier

The Frame Carrier (FC) 3.0 is Kelty’s top of the line child carrier designed for days spent with family exploring the great outdoors. Comfy for both kids and dads, the FC 3.0 ($249) features a fully padded, adjustable cockpit for kids and padded, contoured waistbelt and shoulder straps for parents. A five-point adjustable harness keeps kids up to 50 pounds riding safely while the sliding waistbelt torso adjustment easily fits parents of different sizes. Sierra Designs Meteor Light 4 tent

Built for comfort with extra interior space, the Meteor Light 4 ($399) provides families with ample room to spread out. Two doors and two vestibules make accessing the outdoors easy while giving a ton of space for gear storage. A patent-pending Eye Pole design steepens the tent’s walls for more usable interior space and dads will appreciate how easily this tent pitches. Origo Guide Pro Fishing Watch Highly versatile yet easy to use, Origo’s Guide Pro watch ($240) will increase dad’s fishing productivity by using moon phase data to predict the best times of day for fishing. The Fishing Pro offers an easy-to-read weather forecasting feature; temperature function; barometric pressure trends for the past 30 hours; altimeter resolution to 12 inches; altitude graph covering the past eight hours; one touch direct access digital compass with bearing lock and adjustable declination; multiple chronograph functions with basic and vibration alarm functions; a programmable tide chart; and calendar functions with sunrise/sunset. Primus ExpressSpider camp stove

Durable, lightweight, and stable, the Primus ExpressSpider ($60) is among the lightest hose-fed gas stoves available… perfect for dads who like techy gear. Weighing in at only 7-ounces, the ExpressSpider cranks out 7150 BTU’s per hour and boils a liter of water in 4.5 minutes. A preheating coil ups performance in colder temps and at higher altitudes. A broad base and low center of gravity allows the ExpressSpider to handle both small and large pots, accommodating anywhere from one to four campers. Buy it here- http://www.primuscamping.com/product.php?id=145

Woolrich Confluence Jacket

For the dad you enjoys the outdoors in all conditions, this fully seam-sealed, waterproof/breathable performance shell will keep him covered. The Confluence Jacket ($120) offers an abundance of functionality including waterproof zippers and a fully functioned hood for superior mobility. Combine these features with the ability to roll the jacket into a packable bag and this will quickly become dad’s go-to shell for every trip. Great Dad Talks
Great Dad Talks

Great Dad Talks is a series of conversations with experts on all aspects of the family adventure. With the perspective that “dads don’t always think like moms,” our mission is to support dad voices and our slightly different approaches to parenting. We’ll try to find solutions to every day challenges like getting kids off the couch and making STEM classes available for both boys and girls. But we’ll also tackle bigger issues when they come. The one main theme will be to support dads in the most important role of their lives that of being a great dad.
