Unusual baby names land parents in court

July 25, 2008 by James Dunsford 1 Comment

Most dads are likely to embarrass their kids at some point whether it be cheering along over-enthusiastically a ball game or questioning their daughter’s new boyfriend over his employment prospects, the list is endless.

But some parents go further than others when it comes to humiliating their offspring. Take poor Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii, a young New Zealander landed with this unusual moniker by her mom and dad.

A judge has now made her a ward of court so she can change the name, which she hated so much she refused to tell her friends, going by ‘K’ instead, the BBC reports.

Explaining his decision, judge Rob Murfitt said: "The court is profoundly concerned about the very poor judgment which this child’s parents have shown in choosing this name."

"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap, unnecessarily," the news provider quoted him as saying.

Judge Murfitt alluded to a number of other examples of parents choosing bizarre baby names. Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit were rejected by officials, but Number 16 Bus Shelter, Violence and Midnight Chardonnay were all accepted.

Although names such as these, or less out-there monikers including Trixibelle or Princess, may seem cute and amusing when the baby is born, imagine going for a job and introducing yourself as Midnight Chardonnay.

Experts suggest that names make an important first impression, so parents are advised to consider carefully what their choice might say about their child before committing to a baby name.

There is nothing wrong with giving children odd names. After all what is odd to you may be common elsewhere. Not to mention nearly EVERYONE goes by some kind of nickname or bastaridaztion of their given name. It really makes no difference. If you hate it that much just change it once you’re eighteen… it isn’t difficult.
