Ballistic: Hydra iPhone 5 protection

September 16, 2013 by Paul Banas Leave a Comment

If you’ve ever dunked a phone or camera in the water for “just a second,” and have been disappointed with what happened next, your eyes are always open for gear that will protect your electronics. I’m a not a high adventure guy, but last year, we went on a kayak/zip line combo trip with the kids. I had my camera double sealed in a plastic bag and took it out for just a minute to take a shot. Lift camera, take picture, shift weight, dunk camera in drink. It all happens so fast.

Here is a simple case that I’ll be taking on my next aquatic adventure with my new iPhone. While the
Ballistic Hydra takes a bit to set up and seal, it’s good for when you want to keep using your phone (including voice and music while near the water though not with headphones). I still don’t think I’d take it underwater for long periods, but the sealing mechanism is pretty extensive (and a little time-consuming) and does keep water out in the bathtub tests I did.

Only drawback is the price tag – $80 retail.
