How did the Father’s Day date originate?

The origin of Father’s Day can be traced back to a woman named Sonora Smart Dodd in Spokane, Washington. While listening to a sermon for Mother’s Day back in 1909, Sonora wanted her father to be recognized for his efforts to raise her after her mother died. She believed her dad should be honored just like any loving mother is honored on Mother’s Day. Her father was born in June so she rallied to have the first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910 in Spokane.

In 1926, the National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. This was followed by the recognition of Father’s Day by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon declared the holiday’s national observance as the third Sunday of June.

Father’s Day Date Around the Globe

Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. While United States, India, France, the United Kingdom, Chile, and Japan celebrate the holiday on the third Sunday in June, other countries choose to observe a different Father’s Day date. The spirit of the holiday is the same worldwide i.e. honoring one’s father.
