Kids Define “Love”

October 26, 2006 by GreatDad Writers 37 Comments

A group of professional people posed this question to a group of 4 to 8 year-olds, “What does love mean?”

The answers they got were broader and deeper than anyone could have imagined. See what you think:

“When my grandmother got arthritis, she couldn’t bend over and paint her toenails anymore.

So my grandfather does it for her all the time, even when his hands got arthritis too. That’s love.”

– Rebecca – age 8

“When someone loves you, the way they say your name is different.

You just know that your name is safe in their mouth.”

– Billy – age 4

“Love is when a girl puts on perfume and a boy puts on shaving cologne and they go out and smell each other.”

– Karl – age 5

“Love is when you go out to eat and give somebody most of your French fries without making them give you any of theirs.”

– Chrissy – age 6

“Love is what makes you smile when you’re tired.”

– Terri – age 4

“Love is when my mommy makes coffee for my daddy and she takes a sip before giving it to him, to make sure the taste is OK.”

– Danny – age 7

“Love is when you kiss all the time. Then when you get tired of kissing, you still want to be together and you talk more.

My Mommy and Daddy are like that. They look gross when they kiss”

– Emily – age 8

“Love is what’s in the room with you at Christmas if you stop opening presents and listen.”

– Bobby – age 7 (Wow!)

“If you want to learn to love better, you should start with a friend who you hate.”

– Nikka – age 6

(we need a few million more Nikkas on this planet)

“Love is when you tell a guy you like his shirt, then he wears it everyday.”

– Noelle – age 7

“Love is like a little old woman and a little old man who are still friends even after they know each other so well.”

– Tommy – age 6

“During my piano recital, I was on a stage and I was scared. I looked at all the people watching me and saw my daddy waving and smiling.

He was the only one doing that. I wasn’t scared anymore.”

– Cindy – age 8

“My mommy loves me more than anybody.

You don’t see anyone else kissing me to sleep at night.”

– Clare – age 6

“Love is when Mommy gives Daddy the best piece of chicken.”

– Elaine-age 5

“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy smelly and sweaty and still says he is handsomer than Robert Redford.”

– Chris – age 7

“Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day.”

– Mary Ann – age 4

“I know my older sister loves me because she gives me all her old clothes and has to go out and buy new ones.”

– Lauren – age 4

“When you love somebody, your eyelashes go up and down and little stars come out of you.” (what an image)

– Karen – age 7

“Love is when Mommy sees Daddy on the toilet and she doesn’t think it’s gross.”

– Mark – age 6

“You really shouldn’t say ‘I love you’ unless you mean it. But if you mean it, you should say it a lot. People forget.”

– Jessica – age 8

If I recall correctly there is a video of this which I viewed years ago…I’m sure many people loved these quotes and later quoted them in movies. Most romance novels/movies/etc use referance to famous quotes/ poets/writers.
Even if it was “set up” and the children were actors – I don’t understand why all material posted is always DEBATED instead of enjoyed.
I have a five year old and he talks much like I do – b/c we spend a lot of quality time together. Children mirror others. Could it be that they chose children of brilliant loving families?
I remember telling, my mother that she must really love daddy bc/ she’ll hug and kiss him as soon as he comes home from work – even if he’s all stinky and dirty…and that is love.
Loving a person so much that you dont care about anything else…you’d stop everything to embrace them after a long day (grease, oil, sweat, and all) Better or worse – you know!? Too bad people love to show “worse” instead of “better” on posts via internet.

after reading this, i asked my little sister, (11) what she thinks love is. she sat there and thought for a minute.”when your lonely, everything makes you sad. you see those couple walking down the street and you think, i wish that was me. you feel depressed when you see your best friend sitting with her boyfriend at lunch. then, you meet someone you truly love, and they take you out of that state. you realize that what you have been waiting for was worth it, and you’re up in that cloud with everyone else. don’t cheat on them if you truly love them. and one more thing, love doesn’t suck. rejection sucks. love is amazing, like i said, you’re on that cloud.when your time on that cloud is over, and you get rejected, it hurts when you hit the ground. but eventually, you climb back up. there’s someone out there for everyone, you’re just still on the ground.’ i said to her, ‘holy crap julia! since when were you so deep?’ she laughed quietly. ‘it’s true’ she said shrugging and walking out the door. that proves that little people do have bigger hearts then we think.

Well first of all, I do believe that these are said by little kids. Kids are way more creative than you think. My little cousin says stuff like this all the time. And shes only 4.

I am deeply in love with my Victor. And love is something deep and hard putting into words. But just the simplest sentence can put one of the most complex word, understandable. That’s what i truly admire about these quotes. And i relate to every single one of them. Love is a thing hardly grasped by most people in the world, but the littlest ones, with the biggest hearts, can just smile at you at tell you exactly how it is.

I love these! i got them in a e-mail a while ago too. Makes me happy to read them. And i agree with Joanna “i smiled the whole time i was reading this. it doesn’t matter if they’re by little kids or not…someone had to come up with them. :)”

oh my goodness. these quotes have truly inspired me to think harder and speak my mind about things like life. i think that its amazing how those kids were able to express the word love in a creative way and it makes you think twice about it.

This is really cute stuff. I believe that it’s possible for younger kids to come up with stuff like that. I have younger siblings mostly under 9 who are incredibly smart. To the person who says that it was made up, I think you’re just jealous because you’re not able to come up with something half as good because of the lack of love and intelligence in your life.

Wow, it’s so amazing that there are still people dumb enough to believe that these weren’t just made up by someone…

Do you really believe that little kids came up with this crap? You want to, but try to remember back to when you were that young.

    You people are such tools…

this is great that i stumbled upon this page. i am actually formulating an idea for a movie i want to make, and it’s basically a documentary, where i ask not just children, but people of all ages and types, what they think love is. this was kind of a pre-quel for me, and its making me even more excited to get started on my film. =)

Love is a many spendid thought/feeling. But the trouble is that love and hate have a thin line between. To many decide to be “Me first” and leave love behind. This was society is stupid. There is no honor in families anymore. But there are the ones who think first and wait before being greedy and messing up a real love to get eveything for themselves. To share all with each other is a true love of years to build and look back and both can see what was accomplished.

I just asked my 7 year old what she thought love was: Love is when you wait for daddy to come home a long time when he has to go away to fight the bad guys with the army. Even when it makes you cry. love is also mommy when you hear the song daddy sent you and you cry happy tears. Or when you kiss me good night and say i love you when you think Im sleeping. I hear you mommy.

I have spent many years working with young children (as an aunt, a mother, a former daycare and an elementary teacher) and believe me this is just the ‘the tip of the iceburg’. They often think deeper thoughts than we could ever imagine.

Well, my 6 yr. old step-grandson when asked what kind of flower he thought his new stepmother was, he answered “A sunflower”; asked why he said “Because she’s big and bright and I love them!” – out of the mouth of babes – my daughter IS big and bright and loves him unconditionally!
