10 tips for child safety in the bath

June 1, 2007 by GreatDad Writers Leave a Comment

Every parent would agree that giving an infant a bath can be a stressful job, especially when the child refuses to comply. As a responsible parent, you need to ensure your children’s safety in the bathroom. Here are some tips that you can use to make bathing a safe, enjoyable experience for your child:

  • Before starting the bath, keep all materials (shampoo, soap, towel, etc.) ready.

  • Protect your child from falling or hurting themselves on faucets and spouts by placing a towel over the sharp object.  We like the Boon Flo faucet cover for this purpose.

  • Electrical items (for example, radios and hair dryers) should be way out of reach to prevent the child from touching them.

  • At any point in time, the distance between you and your child should not be more than an arm’s length.

  • Always check the temperature of the water before you bathe your child in it. It should never exceed 120 F. Very hot water can scald your baby while extremely cold water can lead to serious illnesses.

  • Room temperature is also important, and should be moderate, as your wet child can easily chill.

  • Use mild shampoos, soaps, and other bath products. Check if these products are suitable for your baby’s age and skin.

  • Avoid bubble baths.

  • Never leave the child alone, not even for a minute. Every year, several cases of infants drowning are reported even in very little water.

  • If you need to go out to attend an urgent matter, take your child safely wrapped in a towel with you.

  • Use bath rings and bath seats only if your baby is capable of sitting upright.

  • Avoid using bath seats and rings that move when the baby is sitting on it.

  • After the bath, wipe your child thoroughly with a clean towel. Wrap your child in it and then take your child out.
