How to Deal with Diaper Rash

September 20, 2007 by GreatDad Writers Leave a Comment

Diaper rash is caused by the contact of urine and stool with your baby’s skin because the soiled diaper rubs against it. It is normal for a baby to suffer from diaper rash and almost all babies have it. There are, however, ways in which you can control its intensity.

These are measures you can take to safeguard your baby from diaper rash:

  • Change the diaper regularly: This may need to be done every few hours during infancy, but less often as your baby grows up. Also, make it a point to change the diaper immediately after the baby has had a stool.

  • Use plain water wipes: Plain water or unscented wipes may be gentler on your baby’s skin.

  • Wash cloth diapers well: If you are using cloth diapers, make sure you wash them well. Adding vinegar (about half a cup) may help to neutralize alkaline residue of the detergent.

  • Experiment with brands: If you are using disposable diapers, try buying different brands. Some may fit or suit your child better, and may reduce diaper rash.

In case of diaper rash:

  • Wash the affected part gently with plain water.

  • Allow your baby to spend some time without wearing the diaper.

  • Ensure that your baby’s bottom remains dry.

  • Try using a diaper rash cream every time you change the diaper.
