I think basketball is the best sport to teach to children. Not only does it promote teamwork, but it also allows a child the chance to improve himself as an individual athlete. The game is fast paced, as the team is expected to play both offense and defense. It improves hand-eye coordination, muscle strength, flexibility, cardiovascular strength, and helps stimulate the child mentally. Through the clear goal of getting the ball through the hoop, there is a defined objective that every player must work towards. My son is 9 and I introduced him to basketball five years ago. His ball-handling skills and overall awareness have improved greatly, and it has helped him with sports such as tennis and football, where hand-eye coordination and acceleration are crucial. Through experience, I can tell you that basketball was a great first sport to teach him, and I would recommend it to any other parent.
